Ranger trade with Oshawa

Postby Cyclone Taylor on Tue Jun 29, 2010 5:17 pm

Looks like he could be a real good find since he was drafted in the 3rd round by Atlanta in this years NHL draft.

Rangers Head Coach and General Manager Steve Spott announced this afternoon the team has completed a trade with the Oshawa Generals. In the deal the Rangers have acquired defenceman Julian Melchiori in exchange for a conditional 5th round pick in 2013.

Melchiori, a 6'3", 186-pound defenceman, was a 3rd round pick (87th overall) of the Atlanta Thrashers at the 2010 NHL Entry Draft. He spent last season with the Newmarket Hurricanes of the Central Canadian Hockey League where he recorded seven goals and 23 points in 39 regular season games.

Julian Melchiori

Read up on him a little, sounds like he's committed to the University of Massachusetts-Lowell. I'm sure Spott wouldn't make the trade if he didn't know something though.

Sounds like an excellent pick up pending Spott can convince him to report.

I feel like there are alot of players that if they decided to report here would make quite the team.....hopefully a few land in our laps sooner rather then later.

Nice pick up if Spotter can get him in a Rangers sweater. Could be a guy looking to fast track his way to the pro ranks. Coming to play for a contender in the O can do that for you so maybe Spott can convince him to come to Kitchener.
Get well soon Ben.

Melchiori will be a good add if he shows. My buddy lives in Newmarket, got to watch him a lot last year with the Hurricanes, says we'll be glad to have him in all situations but particularly on the PK and at even strength.

Any Scott Mayfield sightings? Between him and Melchiori, we'd have a ton of additional size on the blue-line for next year.

According to vid-clip provided by RangerDanger above he's "taking it one year at a time and wants to make the NHL".
Hopefully with how things were ran in Oshawa the last few years that Kitchener may look mighty fine to him and his family.

With the import pick from today along with the trade for the d-man, Spotter seems to be acquiring a lot of assets. With the number of players returning for this up coming season we seem to be in a good position to make a deal for a real solid veteran shut down d-man. I would love to see us try and get Gudbranson from Kingston (provided he doesn't stick in the NHL). He is exactly the type of guy we need. I know it is wishful thinking but hey, i can always dream! We would be able to give Kingston some valuable assets in return though.

THIS is probably why Spott was at the draft in LA, not for the Import Draft. Very good news!

I have to think that Spott believes there is at least a 50-50 chance of him reporting this upcoming season, probably better. A steal if he reports!

No dice they just traded for Grubauer so why would they pick up a #1 goalie and give up a #1 D-man? makes no sense. Anyways this guy looks down to earth, and I can see Atlanta sending him here, they let Morin come here and most likely he gave parse so why not send the D-man here... A lot of body's on the back end now... I can see some trades

According to the online Record Julian Melchiori was a teammate of Catenacci.
Seems like the stars are aligned for him to come to Kitchener.
Rangers woo blueliner

Julian Melchiori is also on the Rangers’ get-to-report list after they picked up his Ontario Hockey League rights in a swap with the Oshawa Generals on Tuesday.

The 6-foot-3 blueliner, who turns 19 on Dec. 6, was a third-round NHL pick of Atlanta last weekend. The late-blooming defender, a midget teammate of Rangers pivot Mike Catenacci on the Toronto Marlies, skated for the Tier 2 Newmarket Hurricanes last season.

The catch? Melchiori has a full-ride scholarship at the University of Massachussetts-Lowell for the fall. The Rangers will have to convince him to drop his college commitment to come to the OHL. Now that he’s an NHL pick, the Rangers feel they have a good shot at bringing him to the Aud.

“We thought it was worth the risk,” Spott said of the trade.

The Rangers gave up a fifth-round pick in 2013 for Melchiori’s rights. The pick is conditional on him reporting to Kitchener.

If the pick is really conditional as the article says, the Rangers can't lose. Either he reports or they get their pick back. Not sure why Oshawa would make that deal unless the condition lets them take a pick in a later round.

That's what it says on the OHL website. 5th round conditional.

Usually (and I'm not certain this is the case here) the conditional pick is listed at its possible value, which is why you usually see 15th round (cond) in OHL trades and then it goes up from there. I suspect the deal is that Oshawa gets a 5th rounder at minimum but if this guy signs and plays with the Rangers they either get another pick or this 5th rounder becomes a 2nd or 3rd rounder.
