Kitchener Rangers Head Coach and General Manager Steve Spott has announced that the team has signed centre Josh Sterk to an Ontario Hockey League contract.

Sterk was selected in the fifth round of the 2011 Ontario Hockey League Priority Selection.

“I am grateful to be joining the organization. I look forward to playing with the team this coming fall,” said Sterk.

Sterk spent last season with the Mississauga Senators Minor Midget AAA where he tallied 20 goals and 19 assists in 37 games played.

“Josh combines his energetic style of play with hockey sense to give him the ability to control the tempo of the game.” Rangers Head Scout Murray Hiebert said. “Josh’s creativity with the puck should be a welcome addition to the Rangers line-up while providing our fans with a great deal of entertainment.”

Rangers training camp opens on Wednesday, August 31, 2011 at the Kitchener Memorial Auditorium.

Watched Josh in the May camp and he scored some nice goals, seems to have an eye for the net and a real opportunist. He looked a little light but is still pretty young and I am sure will fill out as he goes along.

Surly I questioned the Sterk pick on the draft thread because of size. The LoneRanger responded that he had him at 165 or so. He probably stood out as one of the top forwards in rookie camp with his ability to make plays in traffic and to convert a nothing play into a goal. I watched him in the midget tournament last year in the summer at the Aud and he was noticeable then. Still like those football size players though. That 8 year old is going to be a whomper by the sounds of it.

if Sterk can get up to 165 that is better. he must have hands like a magician.

2007 - 2008 Season

Justin Azevedo - 5' 7" - 170 Pounds 43 Goals 81 Assists 124 Points in 67 games

Spencer Anderson - 6' 1" - 215 Pounds 5 Goals 12 Assists 17 Points in 47 games

Size doesn't matter if the speed and skill are there.

Sterk was listed around 34th in the draft on a lot of list. One scout thought that the Whalers would take him in the second because they needed offense and he was the best player available to provide that. He thought Sterk was the most OHL ready of all the players in that range in the draft . I guess you can take some of what they say with a grain of salt because they are midget players. Its a wait and see thing I guess.

So for Centremen we have the following on the roster:
Mike Catenacci (91)
Andrew Crescenzi (92)
Matia Marcantuoni (94)
Radek Faksa (94)
Zach Lorentz (93)
Josh Sterk (95)

Who stays and who doesn't?

Depth down the middle is a good problem to have, especially with the problems they had last year. For me our lines are as follows: (1) Mike Catenacci, (2) Matia Marcanuoni, (3) Andrew Crescenzi, (4) Josh Sterk. I then move Lorentz and Faksa to the wing, at least for the time being. Faksa has to be on a scoring line so it makes no sense to put him as a center under Cat or Matia. Lorentz played most of last season on the wing so it would make sense he would stay there this year with the depth at center, probably playing on the 3rd line in a checking role.
