Mike Mckenzie is the new GM.

[Edited to correct the spelling of "McKenzie"].

Mckenzie is apologizing for having to lie to all of his friends all week.

Recommended reading to get to know our new GM: "Hockey Dad" by Bob Mckenzie.

What a stupid time to make this move.
Why would this not have been done after the deadline and before the end of the season. I am pretty sure all were aware that this was happening and it would have given Mike the chance to go out meet some kids parents at OHL cup etc. Recruiting them is just as important as drafting them, something we have not done so well at since PD was here.

The only thing i can think is Murray was going to get canned so they said he is retiring and give him a years "severance" in the way of the hockey ops job.

See how it plays out, hope Mike is better at getting kids to show then Murray was.

“In the fall of 2016 Murray informed me that it was his intention to retire following this season, as he thought it was time to take a step back from the workload required as a general manager in our league. Over the next number of months, various discussions led to him agreeing to postpone his retirement for another season, and in the meantime adopting this new role,” said Bienkowski.

Mike was assistant GM for the past year or more so it's not like he hasn't been involved already. But I do agree it could have been done earlier so he could have been introducing himself as THE GM

McKenzie already was already doing recruiting and meeting players, parents and agents in his role as Assistant GM.

He's well known in hockey arenas.

Fun fact: Mike is a former linemate of Matt Halischuk (with the Tier 2 St. Michael's Buzzers).
